Baltoscandia. Latvians [ The Strong Woman . A young man helps a king get married. The grateful animals perform tasks: they thresh barley, gather flax; the young man tames a horse – the bride. On the wedding night, the bride wants to strangle the king. The king runs away from the bedroom, and the young man comes in instead and beats his young wife until she becomes as powerless as a three-year-old child. The next day, the wife tells the young man to cut off her legs and make the king a shepherd. The young man meets an armless strong man. They both kidnap princesses and catch the devil who visits her. The devil heals the young man and the strong man. The young man gives the queen a thrashing and tells the king to beat her every morning]: Arijs, Medne 1977, No. 519: 296; (cf.
